G.I.L

The Joy Luck Club

The triumphant revival of 1920s fashion in China and the non-flowery comeback of 90s fashion. Thank god the costume dept did a nice job with the shoulder pads.

I have long been a fan of the Euro-Asian fusion and this movie caters to my exact taste. Seriously, who doesn’t love cheongsam with pearls.? I call that pure class.

Wonderful movie follows the lives of 2 generations from 2 different eras and in 2 different cultures. I must applaud the production team for the smooth transitioning between the storylines and this is made easier thanks to the accurate periodical costumes.

Sad note: This movie made me reconsider marriage. Really. It’s beautiful yet depressing at the same time…

This movie is so underrated. The costume, the cinematography, the overall tone…absolutely mesmerizing.

Rustic chic style is the principle influence (after all, she’s the well digger’s daughter) and I must say Astrid Berges-Frisbey is stunning in the stills. Simple, yet elegant.

I would kill to have a vintage clothing closet like hers.

Her floral dresses just scream French village and lavender fields. Who wouldn’t want those?

But my absolute favorite scenes from the movie are those which contrast the spacious backdrop with the seemingly plain costumes. These stills just give you a sense of loneliness and lost.

If anyone has not seen it, do it right away. Such a lovely movie that will undoubtedly melt any stone-cold heart.

2046

This time I’m going a bit cultural with a wonderful movie in 2004, called “2046”. It’s a love story, and action and a bit sci-fi; I mean, who wouldn’t love this. And it’s a sequel to “In The Mood For Love”.

This just can’t get any better.

The plot is very interesting and the movie is ,to me, a masterpiece in cinematography and especially in fashion. There are traditional qípáo(s) (I really don’t know if I get this right but you know what I mean) and an unexpected appearance of fashion-forward costumes.

The 70s floral dresses are simply amazing and created a moody feel in every single frame.
